Excavation Services Perth: A Practical Guide for Builders and Site Owners

How often commercial grease traps need cleaning in Perth, the 25% rule, what drives the cost of a service, and how to pick a licensed Controlled Waste Carrier.

BY FREMANTLE RESOURCE SOLUTIONS · 10 MIN READ · UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

Excavation is the first trade on most construction projects and the one that sets the tone for everything after it. Get the levels right, get the spoil off site legally, and the trades that follow run to program. Get it wrong and you pay for it in rework, delays and disposal bills for the rest of the job.

This guide covers what excavation services and earthmoving services in Perth actually include, how local ground conditions change the job, what to check before you engage earthmoving contractors, and the one cost most people forget to ask about.

SECTION 01

What Excavation and Earthmoving Services Cover

Excavation and earthmoving get used interchangeably, but they describe slightly different work. Excavation is digging: trenches, footings, pits and pool excavations. Earthmoving is the broader movement and shaping of ground across a site.

Most earthmoving companies in Perth WA offer some combination of the following.

Site Clearing and Land Clearing

Removing vegetation, grass, trees, rubble and existing structures so the site can be worked. Site clean ups and full machinery clean ups sit here too. Land clearing is usually the first earthmoving activity on greenfield construction projects.

Bulk Earthworks

Large scale cut and fill to bring a site to design level. Bulk earthworks is the heavy end of earthmoving, common on commercial projects, subdivisions and large commercial developments where thousands of cubic metres get moved.

Site Preparation and Levelling

Site scaping, shaping and grading ground ahead of construction. On residential projects this is pad preparation for a slab. Good site preparation is what stops a builder standing around waiting.

Trenching and Drainage

Excavating for underground services: stormwater drainage, sewer, water, power and communications. Trenchers are used for laying long service runs efficiently. Drainage work is one of the most common earthmoving services requested across the Perth metro area.

Final Trim

The precision pass that brings a prepared pad to exact finished level before the slab goes down. Final trim is where a good operator earns their money, because construction cannot start until levels are right.

Detailed and Mini Excavation

Tight access work using smaller machinery. Common on small residential projects, infill developments, landscaping preparation, soak wells and pool excavations. Not every excavation contractor carries machinery small enough for restricted access, so confirm it early.

Demolition and Removal

Concrete, driveway and paving removal, and demolition of small structures ahead of a rebuild. Often bundled into site clearing on residential earthmoving projects.

Some earthmoving contractors also offer material supply, retaining walls and rock breaking. Worth asking about up front, because not every contractor carries that range of capability.

SECTION 02

Perth Ground Conditions Change the Job

Perth is not one soil type, and the ground under your site drives cost more than almost anything else on earthmoving projects.

Much of the coastal plain is sand, which digs easily but batters back and needs careful trench support. Move inland and you hit limestone, which can stop a standard excavator bucket and require rock breaking or a different attachment. Limestone is common enough across Perth that experienced earthmoving contractors price for the possibility. Parts of the eastern and south eastern suburbs carry heavier clay, which holds water, moves seasonally and behaves differently again through winter.

Two sites a few kilometres apart can quote very differently for the same scope. When you get a price, ask what soil type has been assumed and what happens if the ground turns out different once machinery is on site. A contractor with genuine Perth WA experience will have a view before they dig, not after.

SECTION 03

The Cost Nobody Asks About: Where the Spoil Goes

Here is where excavation projects quietly blow their budget.

Everything you dig out has to go somewhere. On a clean residential site that is straightforward. On a workshop, depot, service station, industrial site or anywhere with a history, the spoil may be contaminated with hydrocarbons or other material, and the moment it is, it stops being clean fill.

In Western Australia contaminated spoil is classified as controlled waste. It cannot go to a standard tip or clean fill site. It has to be classified, transported by a licensed carrier and taken to an approved facility, with tracking documentation issued for the load.

Most earthmoving companies are not licensed to do that. They dig, then subcontract the disposal, which means a second contractor, a second invoice, a delay while it gets arranged, and a gap in accountability if the paperwork is wrong. The site owner carries the liability either way.

Ask this before you engage anyone: if the spoil comes back contaminated, who moves it and under whose licence?

SECTION 04

How to Choose Earthmoving Contractors in Perth

  • Licences and insurance. Confirm the contractor is fully insured for the work and check what waste licences they hold if disposal is likely.
  • Equipment matched to access. A large excavator is useless behind a 2.4 metre side gate. Confirm the machinery and equipment suit the site, not just the scope.
  • Underground services. Ask how they identify existing services before digging. Dial Before You Dig plans, service locating and non destructive digging where required.
  • Spoil and disposal. Who removes it, where does it go, and is that cost in the quote or excluded.
  • Program and resources. Excavation delays push every trade behind it. Ask about crew resources and realistic start dates, and whether they can deliver efficient turnaround on your program.
  • Safety record. Excavation is high risk work. Trench collapse and service strikes are the two big ones. A contractor should explain their safety controls without hesitating.
  • Reinstatement. Confirm the site is left clean and tidy, and who backfills and compacts.
  • Reputation. In a competitive market, a strong reputation built on repeat clients tells you more than a website. Ask for builders or developers they work with regularly.

SECTION 05

Residential, Commercial and Civil Projects

Earthmoving scales enormously. The machinery, program and cost structure for small residential projects look nothing like bulk earthworks on a commercial development.

Residential earthmoving

Covers pad preparation, pool excavations, landscaping preparation, soak wells, driveway removal and drainage trenching. Access is usually the constraint, so mini excavation equipment does most of the work.

Commercial projects

Bring larger volumes, tighter tolerances and more compliance. Site preparation for warehouses, hardstands, car parks and industrial developments needs proper survey control and a contractor who can hold levels across a big footprint.

Civil works

Covers infrastructure: road works, drainage networks, service corridors and subdivision earthworks. Civil projects generally run under more formal documentation and a longer program.

The best earthmoving contractors handle a range across all three rather than specialising so narrowly they cannot flex.

SECTION 06

Our Excavation and Earthmoving Services

Fremantle Resource Solutions delivers excavation and earthmoving services across Perth, from mini excavation through to larger scale excavation on commercial projects.

Our scope covers excavator operations for site clearing with grab attachment available, trenchers for laying services, bulldozer and posi track site preparation, final trim, site levelling, demolition, concrete and paving removal, and vegetation clearing. We run equipment suited to both tight residential access and open commercial sites.

What makes us different is the second half of the job. We are a licensed Controlled Waste Carrier operating under Licence T00004, so when spoil comes out contaminated we are licensed to classify, transport and dispose of it ourselves. One contractor, one program, one complete set of documentation.

That capability connects directly to our hydrocarbon waste management and hazardous waste services, and to industrial waste removal on larger sites. Where excavation exposes drainage or wastewater infrastructure, our stormwater and soak well servicing teams pick it up from there, and we assist with NDD applications when work sits near underground services.

We take great pride in the quality of our work. As an established family owned Western Australia business with three generations of trade expertise behind it, our reputation is built one site at a time. Our experienced team and operations crew are committed to leaving every job properly finished, with the efficiency and quality our clients expect.
